As most of us lie sleeping, each Spring morning, magic is unfolding in the trees, fields and hedgerows that thread through our city.
The dawn chorus is a natural phenomenon that needs to be heard to be believed. As countless birds take up their positions, guarding territories and protecting nests to stake their claim as they sing their hearts out, the result is an almost overwhelming “surround sound” experience, more akin to a teeming rainforest than a concrete jungle, even in our urban setting.
While the prospect of setting a (very) early alarm might not thrill you, you’ll never regret experiencing the dawn chorus as the sun rises over the hills of Bath…
This year, Bath City Farm are inviting you to come and be part of this seasonal highlight. On May 16th, join expert wildlife guide, Nick Patel, and head out into the farm’s fields to enjoy the stunning views and incredible chorus. Nick will help with the IDing of birds, as you learn to know them by their individual songs. You’ll also get a chance to spot foxes, badger and deer that all pass across the land here in the early hours of the morning.
After enjoying the dawn chorus, head back up to the farm for hot drinks and some well deserved pastries – to chat about what you’ve seen and heard.
This is an experience that will have you thinking differently about the city and our place in it – as you bear witness to the huge amount of wildlife we’re lucky enough to share Bath with, and get a sense of the incredible seasonal shift that nature goes through each May.
