Covid deaths rise in Bath and Somerset as UK fatalities soar

Ten more people who tested positive for Covid have died in Bath and Somerset, according to the government’s daily update.

The most recent Public Health England data now states there have been 739 Covid deaths in our area since it began keeping record.

There were a total of ten deaths recorded across the county within 28 days of a positive Covid test in today’s figures (January 19), with five of these coming in the same area.

These were recorded in the Somerset West and Taunton area, where the total number of deaths is now stands at 87.

There were four further deaths recorded in the Mendip region, taking the total to 99, and one more in Bath and North East Somerset, where there has now been 104.

The total number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test recorded by Public Health England in each area, again with the new deaths in brackets, are as follows:

Over 400 new cases confirmed across county

There have also been more than 400 new positive tests recorded across Bath and Somerset today.

There were a total of 409 new confirmed cases, bringing our total since the beginning of the pandemic to 29,335.

Around a quarter of these new cases were reported in North Somerset, where there were 100 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Bath and North East Somerset (82) and Somerset West and Taunton (75) were the areas to see the next most new cases, with Mendip (44) seeing the fewest new positive tests.

The total number of Covid cases confirmed in each Bath and Somerset region, with the number of new cases recorded in the last 24 hours in brackets, are as follows:

  • Bath and North East Somerset – 6,684 (+82)
  • Mendip – 2,493 (+44)
  • North Somerset – 8,044 (+100)
  • Sedgemoor – 3,902 (+49)
  • Somerset West and Taunton – 4,390 (+75)
  • South Somerset – 3,822 (+59)

UK cases and deaths

There were a total of 33,355 new cases of the virus confirmed across the United Kingdom in the last 24 hours, taking the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 3,433,494.

This is a drop of around 4,000 on yesterday’s new cases (January 18).

However, there were also a total of 1,610 deaths recorded within 28 days of a positive test across the country.

This brings the total to 91,470 across the UK.
