Bath Rugby are set to sign South African hooker Jacques du Toit on a short term deal according to the latest reports.
According to RugbyInsideLine and sources in South Africa, Bath director of rugby Stuart Hooper is looking to line up cover in the specialist frontrow position with Tom Dunn potentially involved with England again during the 2021 Guinness Six Nations having finally earned his first international caps for Eddie Jones’ side this Autumn.
Aside from Dunn, Bath’s options at hooker are: Jack Walker, Ross Batty and Tom Doughty.
Du Toit, 27, is one of many South African players facing an uncertain future following the collapse of the country’s two Pro14 teams after they were effectively kicked out of the northern hemisphere competition the for 2020/21 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He was preparing to captain the Southern Kings having switched from the Cheetahs last season before the club went into voluntary liquidation. However he made an immediate return to the Toyota Free State Cheetahs and has since been playing for them in South Africa’s domestic competition the Currie Cup.
Like so many South African forwards, Du Toit is a physical player, standing at 1.83m and weighing in at 104kg.
His former sides include the Cheetahs, Free State, and South Africa Under-20s.
According to the reports he will link up with Bath in January, 2021.
